DARK DEFENDER – DARK MASTERY EPIC POWER POOL

All of these ancillary powers come from the scrapper’s power set, specifically the Dark Melee and Dark Armor set of powers, and operate in pretty much the same manner as for scrappers. This is a serious drawback for dark defenders who rely on their ranged powers, and usually try to avoid jumping next to enemies who can squish them like bugs -- something nearly all of these epic powers require one to do. From personal experience and various sources I have gleaned the following information that you may find useful.

POWER NAME: Oppressive Gloom
DESCRIPTION: The Netherworld has many mutable properties, such as the Oppressive Gloom. This power allows you to use your own life force (Hit Points) to fuel an attack that can keep enemies near you Disoriented and unable to use any powers. Endurance cost for this is minimal, but the power can be dangerous to use.
Toggle: PBAoE, Foe Disorient, Self -HP
Rating: Optional
Slot: 1 Accuracy, 2 Disorient Duration.
Identical to the Scrapper power. PBAOE aura that disorients any Minions around you if it hits. Pulses every 3 seconds I believe, which means that minions will be permanently disoriented as long as they're in range. You can also disorient Lts and even Bosses IF you can stack it with other Disorient attacks such as Dark Pit or Howling Twilight. It does take away some health when it is used, but not much. Disorienting your enemies is not assured because of the requirement to hit them first -- this reduces the power's ability to help in an emergency. The Dark Defender's ofther disorient power, Dark Pit, is far superior because of its ability to attack from a distance and it's Area of Effect (AoE) radius is more than double that of Opressive Gloom.

POWER NAME: Dark Consumption
DESCRIPTION: The dark power of the Netherworld allows you to tap the soul-essence of foes immediately around you and transfer it to yourself. This will drain the Hit Points of the enemies, and add to your Endurance.
PBAoE Moderate DMG(Negative), Self +End
Rating: Not Recommended
Slot: 1 Accuracy, 3 Recharge.
PBAOE Scrapper power. Drains enemies of Health and adds to your Endurance. Apparently this is a staple power for dark scrappers (useful for emergency endurance), but for defenders this power is problematic. HItting at least 3 villains with this power fills up your endurance bar instantly, but the opportunity or chance to hit a minimum of 3 villains within the small radius of this power only occurs about 50% if the time at best in my experience. The long recharge time makes this power likely to be used only once during most battles. This power also uses some endurance to activate, so make sure you are not completely out of endurance when you go to use it (which kind of defeats the power's purpose). All in all, I have NOT found this power to be particularly useful, and, more often than not, forces the defender to put themselves in unecessary danger for a hit or miss endurance boost. Good for scrappers and tankers, bad for defenders.  Avoid it.

POWER NAME: Dark Embrace
DESCRIPTION: You tap into the energy of the Netherworld to protect yourself from damage. This Dark Embrace shrouds you and grants resistance to Lethal, Smashing, Toxic, and Negative Energy damage. You must have Oppressive Gloom or Dark Consumption before selecting this power.
Toggle: Self +Res (Smash, Lethal, Negative, Toxic)
Rating: Highly Recommended
Slot: 6 Damage Resistance
Scrapper power again. This power reduces the damage you take from more types of damage than any other shield available to defenders. Not surprisingly, it is the choice pick for defenders who want to be less squishy. It has a very low endurance cost. By far, this is the most useful and the only reliable power in the Dark Mastery epic power pool. If you don't get anything else from the Dark Mastery epic power pool, get this power.

POWER NAME: Soul Drain
DESCRIPTION: Using this power, you can drain the essence of all nearby foes' souls, thus increasing your own strength. Each affected foe will lose some Hit Points and add to your Damage and Accuracy. You must have two other Dark Mastery Powers before selecting this power.
PBAoE Moderate DMG (Negative), Self +DMG, +ACC
Rating: Optional
Slot: 1 Accuracy, 2 Recharge
Yet another power that forces the defender to put themselves at risk. Soul Drain is a PBAOE attack that hits all nearby enemies for paltry damage, but boosts your Damage and Accuracy for every enemy you hit. Think of it as your own, somewhat unreliable, PBAOE Fulcrum Shift. This is the self damage buff Defenders have always wanted... and still don't have. If this power could be used at range, it would be a good pick for dark defenders. As is, however, it's too unreliable, and the damage boost one receives is not enough to warrant the risk. On the other hand, damage and accuracy boosts are niceties and not necessities, so the dire consequenes of a miss with this power are not as great as with a power such as Dark Consumption. At most you'll get a fairly nice damage and accuracy boost, at worst you'll get knocked out because you got too close to the villains... or, ironically, sometimes both.
